I recently started to work in a marketing agency, so I wanted to share my thoughts and strategic thinking behind it.
The key thing you need to know about me is that I strongly believe in the principle of “working to learn not to earn”. I believe if I choose my career steps based on where I can grow most as a person, the money, success and everything else will follow automatically.
Now, what does that have to do with me starting to work in an online marketing agency?
My overall professional goal in life is to build companies that can have a big positive impact on the world. The bigger the better. When you look at start-up founder teams they typically consist of three types of people.
- a product person,
- an operations person, and
- a go-to-market person.
Based on my experience, talents and interests, I always saw myself as the go-to-market person.
For bringing products to market successfully you need to have a few different skillsets. The more you have the better.
- You need to be a strong salesperson,
- You need to be a strong marketer and
- You need to strong in customer retention.
Due to my work in the last 10 years, I believe I became a decently strong sales person. Of course there are always ways to improve, but I have seen and worked in many sales roles. Direct to consumer sales, B2B sales to small companies and lastly B2B sales to large enterprises, which requires to manage long, complex sales cycles.
During that time, I acquired some theoretical knowledge about marketing and online marketing, but I have never executed any marketing activities or marketing campaigns. Hence, my skillset in that area in my assessment is strongly underdeveloped. And as I can’t found a new company now, due to private reasons, I want to use the next 2-3 years to upskill myself in that critical area.
I want to say special thanks to Thomas and his team. I am very grateful for the opportunity to join the online marketing agency Bacon & Bold. I am super motivated to quickly learn all the necessary skills, but also to provide some inputs from my entrepreneurial experience to help bring the company forward.
That’s the other thing about business and life. It has to be win win. Bacon & Bold will benefit from my work and experience, and I will become an online marketing machine by working to learn, not to earn. :-)
